The Oxford Companion to the Garden is a big book in every sense and is probably the only encyclopaedia of gardening that you will ever need. Just like a traditional encyclopaedia, it is set out alphabetically but, if you want to look up all the information on a particular subject, then there is a useful Thematic Index at the front. For example, if you wanted to know about 'plant collectors and explorers', this index contains a list making it easier to find them in alphabetical entries. Although this book contains all the information you would expect on plants and gardening techniques, it also includes biographies of people associated with gardening like landscape designers; artists; sculptors and craftsmen; naturalists and botanists; and landowners, politicians and statesmen. There is also information on gardens and gardening all over the world. This book will make an ideal birthday or Christmas gift for somebody or even for yourself.
